The story I heard from an objective friend is that Dale (Barrett), Jimi, Jeremy, Barton and two juniors I don’t know were caught smoking pot on campus because someone’s roommate told on them.
My take on that: While, yes, smoking pot on campus is a ridiculously bad idea, I think the roommate should be hung up by his toes for telling on them. Also, I think the people who are acting happy about it are being tasteless. Being kicked out of school isn’t like having a bad grade or even like being suspended. It fucks a lot of stuff up. And yeah, they shouldn’t have done it but how many of us could have stayed in school if we had been caught every time we did something stupid? Not me for sure. Definitely not Jacob, Mason, certainly not any of the juniors I liked at all, not Tim, not Tara, and probably not the majority of the people I enjoyed so much. So I guess I don’t find it as funny because…it isn’t funny. It sucks.
I had heard about Jeremy, Barett, and Jimi, but I hadn’t heard about Barton. I agree, smoking on campus is a majorly bad idea, especially when that substance is an illegal one. And while I feel for them, as this will certainly follow them indefinitely, I can’t help but think “oh well…” I see your point about how we’ve all made bad decisions and have gotten away with it, but when we did stupid shit like them, we took the same risk that they did. The only difference was that we didn’t get caught. Maybe it makes me a little inhuman to think like this, but I can’t let my own past mistakes influence the way I see this situation. I do feel bad for the fact that their times are now hard, but I respect it as the necessary consequences of their decisions. Had it happened to me, it would have sucked, but I would have respected it and moved forward. Thoughts?
